World capital of the Préhistoire
The town of Eyzies de Tayac-Sireuil has numerous attractions : a troglodyte architecture so unique, an exceptional natural space, true conviviality and of course prehistory. Men have lived here and maintained various activities throughout the ages; paleolithic, neolithic, 100 years war, agriculture development, industrial era, the “invention” of the “prehistorical science“, tourism development…
The village presents itself the “world capital of prehistory“. Local tourism was born there right after the first archeological discoveries were made. This is where prehistory was built as a science through famous names such as Peyrony, Lartet, Capitan, Breuil and Glory; this is where the man of cro-magnon was discovered, in the cro-magnon shelter; this is where we found wonders of parietal art among which is the last opened polychromic painted cave opened to the public : Font de Gaume. The national museum of prehistory is implanted in the Eyzies, it’s the absolute reference when it comes to collections of the superior paleolithic; which mainly come from the valley of Vezere.
